about

He has never met her, though he has always been curious. Rosalind, his grandmother, died young. It was cancer. She was 40.

Ryan Thomas Schmale - aka That Ghost - is constantly looking to the past for inspiration. If it's not old cinema, it's old literature, old poetry, photography. There's an emotional and visceral reaction to discovering our link to those before us. It was photographs in this case: a few frayed-edged black-and-white and sepia prints with glossy finger-oil-smudged plastic peeling off the image. Who was she? What was she like? What was The Bay like back then...?

This EP, named in her honor, is a collection of rarities and one-offs that Schmale has recorded between records during his incredibly prolific and brief career. Each haunting melody elicits ghosts past, fading memories, and memories that were never our own.

These songs are not lesser, not 'only' part of an EP. These songs were not 'left off an album'. Every That Ghost song that sees the light of day is worth an equal listen. Schmale doesn't think in 'releases'. He does not think in 'LPs' or 'EPs'. He records so regularly and with such thought and constant effort. The question isn't: How many That Ghost songs have we heard? It’s: How many songs will we never hear?
